The Community Basketball League joins the wider British basketball family in mourning the passing of Coach David Lavinier, a deeply respected figure whose influence on young people, coaches, and communities has shaped the landscape of London basketball for more than three decades.
Coach Lavinier’s journey through the game is one of talent, service, and unwavering commitment. A standout guard for the East London Royals, he was regarded as one of the finest shooters of his generation — leading his team to national championships under Humph Long and proudly representing England at youth level. His excellence as a player laid the foundation for what would become an extraordinary life dedicated to developing others.
In 2002, Dave founded Eastside Eagles Basketball Club in Waltham Forest, building what would become one of East London’s most respected grassroots programmes. His vision was simple but powerful: to use basketball as a vehicle for belief, discipline, and opportunity. Under his leadership, the Eagles grew into a beacon of community-inspired basketball, with countless young people finding purpose and confidence through his guidance.
His impact extended far beyond one club.
Through his roles at Barking Abbey Basketball Academy, the London Lions organisation, local schools, and numerous youth development initiatives, Coach Lavinier helped shape the culture of the sport at every level — from grassroots to professional environments. His presence brought calm, wisdom, humility, and a deep sense of care to every gym he entered.
Across the CBL, Coach Lavinier was known not only for his basketball knowledge, but for the values he taught through the game: respect, hard work, integrity, and unwavering faith. The young people he mentored carry those lessons with them long after their playing days, which stands as one of the truest measures of his legacy.
To honour his lifelong service to the community and his immeasurable contribution to youth basketball in London, the CBL Coach of the Year Award will now be named the David Lavinier Coach of the Year Award. This annual recognition will stand as a lasting tribute to a man who embodied the very best of what our league represents.
The CBL extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and to everyone who knew and loved him. Coach Lavinier’s legacy will continue to shine through the generations of players, coaches, and communities he inspired.
Rest in peace, Coach Dave.
Your impact lives on in every corner of the game you helped to build.
