PARENTS OFTEN ASK...
Comfortable sports clothing and trainers with good grip are perfect. We recommend shorts or tracksuit bottoms, a T-shirt, and bringing a water bottle. Hoopstars players can also wear their official Hoopstars training kit once registered.
Absolutely. Hoopstars is designed for every ability level — from complete beginners learning the basics to more advanced players sharpening their game. Each session is structured to make sure every child learns, progresses, and enjoys basketball at their own pace.
Camden Hoopstars Junior Varsity sessions are open to boys and girls aged 8–12. Players are grouped by age and ability so that every child is challenged appropriately and supported to improve.
Each session builds fundamental basketball skills — dribbling, passing, shooting, defence, teamwork, and movement — while developing confidence, focus, and discipline. Players progress through our 10-Star development system, earning recognition as their skills grow.
Camden Hoopstars is led by Coach AJ Roberts — a fully-qualified, DBS-checked coach with a high-level playing background in the USA and Europe, including NCAA college basketball and a BBL Trophy Championship with London City Royals. AJ is known for his positive, professional approach and his ability to help young players of all abilities learn the game properly, build confidence, and enjoy every session in a safe, structured environment.
If your child misses a class, you can attend a make-up session at another Hoopstars location within the same term (subject to space). Just contact us in advance so we can help you book a replacement session.
The 10-Star system is our unique player pathway. Every player starts at Star 1 and advances through ten progressive levels — each covering key basketball skills, physical development, and game understanding. Players earn stars through effort, improvement, and testing milestones.
Yes! Hoopstars players are scouted from our sessions to join their Hoopstars borough representative teams in the Community Basketball League (CBL) — London’s biggest youth basketball competition. It’s a fantastic opportunity to play for borough pride and test their skills against others across the city.
Yes. Every new player is invited to start with a trial session if preferred. Trial options are availalbe on all class bookings and give new players a full training experience to meet the coach, feel the energy, and see what makes Hoopstars different.
Yes. Free weekend parking on the the surrounding streets to Acland Burghley. Tufnell Park tube station is 2 minutes away from the venue. Tufnell park is also well-serviced by the following buses: 4, 134 & 390. Acland is also a 10-15 minute walk from Gospel Oak train station on the North London Line and aslo the Gospel Oak to Barking Line.

AJ ROBERTS
MEET COACH AJ
Coach AJ Roberts brings a rare blend of elite playing experience and proven youth development to Hoopstars. Born in Fresno, California, AJ climbed the US basketball system through high school, junior college, and NCAA competition — earning All-Region honours at Union University, where he averaged 14 points per game.
After college, AJ built a successful professional career across Europe and the UK, including winning a BBL Trophy Championship with the London City Royals and earning recognition as Britain’s #1 FIBA 3x3 player. He has competed at elite international events such as Quai 54 in Paris, facing NBA and EuroLeague talent while representing Midnight Madness Select.
Now a fully qualified, DBS-checked coach — and current Captain of the London Cavaliers — AJ leads by example on and off the court. His easy-going, positive personality is matched by high expectations and a commitment to teaching the game the right way. He’s passionate about helping every player, from beginner to advanced, unlock their potential and understand how to succeed through hard work, focus, and discipline.
