OUR HISTORY

FROM GRASSROOTS TO GREATNESS

The Brent Panthers, affiliated with LSB and a member club of the National Governing Body - Basketball England, emerged from the Brent Hoopstars' weekly training sessions in Wembley in 2016.

Lifelong friends Nhamo Shire (LSB founder) and Jay Williams (GB International Player and Coach) have a proven track record of delivering impactful basketball programmes and successful coaching projects and have collaborated extensively on numerous high-profile, community-focused basketball initiatives over the years.

Both Shire and Williams have deep roots in Brent and felt a strong desire to create something new for the local youth. With Shire leading the strategy and Williams the coaching, the sessions initially took place under the Hoopstars Brent classes, operating through the LSB development funnel.  The overarching LSB strategy was to establish a 'root to fruit' community basketball development pilot project that started with sustainable coaching but eventually evolved into something more.

Through the Brent Hoopstars coaching classes, a dedicated group of young players, supported by enthusiastic parents, soon emerged and eventually expressed a desire to compete. In 2017, the team entered the CBL (Community Basketball League) as the 'Brent Hoopstars.'

In 2018, Shire joined Williams on the sidelines, and the team’s skills and results flourished, culminating in a run to the CBL Playoff Finals. Encouraged by the parents, the team transitioned to the 'Brent Panthers,' establishing a full-fledged community club to sustain and expand the positive progress started by the Hoopstars.

In 2019, the Panthers joined the top division of the CBL U12 division, narrowly missing out on the final in overtime. This performance hinted at something special brewing in Brent.

The pandemic presented challenges, but the Panthers community grew stronger. The club stayed connected through home workouts and challenges, and once outdoor training was allowed, they resumed practices in local parks. The 2021 summer season in the CBL was a landmark for the Panthers with the addition of new coaches and the managerial injection of a formal club committee that enabled the club to evolve. On court, coming out of the pandemic, the Panthers continued to go from strength to strength in the memorable CBL Summer League with classic matchups against OWE, London Elite, and Southwark Legends, cementing the Panthers' reputation as a formidable team.

In 2022 the club entered the National League in the U14 and U16 age groups, performing well from the outset. The U16 team finished the season as league runners-up with a 20-2 record, narrowly missing promotion. The Panthers also secured their first championships, winning the U12 and U16 Division 1 and sweeping across the divisions in the CBL.

For the 2023-24 season, the U18 and new U16 girls' teams were added to the National League lineup. The U14 team capped an outstanding season by winning their Conference division and earning promotion to the National League Premier Division.

Now a thriving, independent non-profit organisation with over 100 members, the Brent Panthers are managed by a dedicated committee. Our focus remains on providing quality-driven opportunities for the next generation. We offer mentorship and foster positive life skills through basketball, enabling our players to grow both on and off the court.
