COHENEL guard Tobi Ojuri has been named ABL Western Conference Most Improved Player honours for the 2019/20 season, making history as the first Warriors player to ever receive the coveted award.

After playing a pivotal role in the Warriors run to the Final Fours, Ojuri’s impact on both ends of the floor caught the attention of coaches throughout the league, who have recognised the major improvement the explosive guard has made since last season.

Ojuri was always known as a ‘lock down’ defender who has the quickness, strength and appetite to apply full-court pressure to opposing guards, all game and had built up a reputation as a player point guards did not want to play against.  However this season, the mercurial talent added a potent jump shot and lethal drive package to his arsenal, establishing himself as one of the top three point shooters in the league at 39.3%.  With his newfound powers, developed over a summer of intense workouts and preparations, Ojuri raised his scoring average to a solid 15.4ppg, in all ABL competitions and placed in the top 10 across both three point shooting and free-throw percentage.

“Tobi has been a big part of our motor that makes us run this season. We look to him to get it started on the defensive end, but his offence has now also developed to the point where he has been dominant in a lot of our games this year.  It’s definitely a well-deserved award – he’s put in the hours and his game now is that good.”

– AJ Roberts

With another year of eligibility remaining in the ABL, Ojuri is in good stead to take things even further next year, as coach AJ Roberts builds the 2020/21 team around his athletically gifted guard.
